Barium Sulfate - an overview ScienceDirect Topics

Barium sulfate is a soft crystalline solid. It is a rhombic crystal. The pure salt is white but the color of the mineral “barite” can vary between red, yellow, gray or green, depending on impurities. Its density is 4.50 g/cm 3 and its refractive index is 1.64. It melts around 1580 °C but decomposes above 1600 °C.

Reflectance of Barium Sulfate and White Paint Mixtures

However, pure barium sulfate dries to a powder and easily rubs off surfaces. We sought to increase the durability of barium sulfate by mixing it with untinted white latex paint. Reflectance and durability of different ratios of this BaSO 4 and paint mixtures were measured from 430 to 950 nm with an Apogee-StellarNet spectroradiometer.

The effects of sulfate content on crystalline phase ...

Abstract. The effects of sulfate content on structure and chemical durability of barium borosilicate glass-ceramics were studied. The results show that the glass-ceramics with 0-1.10 mol% SO 3 possess mainly CaZrTi 2 O 7-2M phase along with a small amount of CaZrTi 2 O 7-3T and ZrO 2 phases. The hexagonal CaZrTi 2 O 7-3T crystals crystallize on the surface of glass-ceramics.
